Artist's Comments

this painting is COMPLETELY inspired by DREDG and SALVADOR DALI, its essentially the picture that is painted in my head when i hear THE CANYON BEHIND HER, probably the greatest song of all time. this piece took me two years- on and off- to complete. probably my first real serious work.

heres the explanation...

"i saw a distant port
with no water to support
burning,
the bridge between"

the eye = I saw
the bridge/the desert/the beached ship= the port with no water
the burning bridge= the burning bridge
the cliff/canyon= is behind her
the skull/heart= "though half of me is gone, the lonesome part is there"

personally, if/when i feel isolated, it effects me in my head and heart- and by binding these two elements, this constitutes the "lonesome part."

the background landscape was inspired by last summer's trek to the gorge- very eastern washingtonish.

The cloud was a nod to the cloud on the entry page of dredg's old website.

thanks to dredg for making incredible orgasmic music
thanks to my friends for being awesome

I agree that this is probably the best song ever written. Nice work. You are my new favorite painter. Whoa is me.

Incidentally, how long have you been a dredg fan? I first heard of them in 1995 when I was in Japan. Leitmotif was the only cd out back then. I got mine in Japan. You have excellent taste.

wow, thank you very much!

As for dredg, I first heard them in early 2003, on the sno-core tour. Totally blew me away. I'm really enjoying their new album- but I still feel that el cielo is their best work.

Thanks for your comment, I'll have to break out the brushes again!

Of course El Cielo is their most artistic album, hence the inspiration for artwork. I think it might be hard to paint a painting based on, oh something like Spitshine or Catch Without Arms. El Cielo inspires all of us. As for the new album, I'm really digging 'Mourning this Morning' and 'Quotes'. Nothing as uplifting as Canyon, but there are moments where the music takes a turn and just melts your insides. That is what I love about Dredg so much, I always have this overall feeling of HOPE when I listen to them. Spiritual hope, hope for humanity, hope for society. And of course hope for a better world or afterworld.

Between El Cielo and Mewithoutyou's Brother, Sister, I think those are the only two albums I need.
